This season it’s all about a neon lip. For one I’m glad about this as I’m a pro at this sort of make up and consider it an accessory in it’s own right – something that exists to add pop to an outfit and enhance everything else. I have this thing with lip colours where each hue embeds a unique personality on me and somehow I feel different. This particular hue of fuchsia makes me feel as if I am one of the Pink Ladies , nonchalantly cool on the outside with a hot temper and a wicked sense of humour (breaking into song optional ). It does help that it is a really classic look that goes with a wide variety of outfits but I am pretty particular however about the fact it is always matt lipstick, not gloss – that would be too “Clueless” , too shiny and LA.
This is a perfect make up look to compliment ladylike 50s clothes because it adds a modern and fresh dimension to somewhat conservative shapes. Miu Miu leads the push toward a new kind of elegance this season and the trend continues into next season with a huge amount of designers reworking slimline , long pencil skirts , skirtsuits and other Mad Men staples.
Start with a good coverage base , like DuWop’s foundation of youth, that magically fills in fine lines, adds a healthy glow and evens out imperfections. I like to squeeze a little bit on the back of my hand and then apply it with my fingers. Make sure to warm your fingers slightly so the product really sinks into the skin. The goal here is for the foundation to completely blend in and for the face to look naturally perfect . Next, line the top lid really close to the lash line , starting at the inner edge of the iris and ending just before the outside corner of the lid. I like using Stila’s stay all day waterproof liner in brown because it is easy and precise to apply and looks suitably natural, only enhancing the eye slightly. Put a light dusting of Too Faced Natural by Night eyeshadow in Nightcap into the socket crevice and finish off with a black lash building mascara like Too Faced Lash Orgasm. Accentuate the cheekbones by dabbing Stila’s convertible colour in Peony ,blending it in well so that you define the contours in a natural way. It is important for the base to only be perfected rather than really made up, because you want the lip to be the main event. A light dusting of Benefit’s Hello Flawless powder across the T zone will add the final touch and take shine away. Now for the lips! I love Nars’ Schiap richly pigmented pink hue and it’s creamy consistency. The trick to keeping lip colour on is careful and consistent layering. I like to start with a little matt foundation on the lip – I find it leaves the canvas pure and without a hue so the lipstick’s colour can truly shine. Apply a layer of lipstick over this ( I like to ever so slightly go over the edges on the top lip to add a little more pout – be careful with this though : there is a fine line between tasteful and overdone ). Now take a tissue and dust the tiniest amount of powder on top of it , then press this on the lips to remove excess colour and mattify the lip. Repeat the lipstick application and blotting step up to 3 times for a longer lasting lip colour that won’t budge , but do not add powder to the tissue on the final pressing.
This lip really does stay on all night if done right, removing all that pesky anxiety associated with wearing lip colour : budging, smearing, teeth staining. And no anxiety means you can drink your Pink Lady cocktails and flirt in peace. I dare you to use that sexy pout to deliver the famous : “Tell me about it…stud” line and floor that T-bird’s heart !
