Australian RTW label Viktoria+Woods has collaborated with the media personality Lindy Klim on a capsule collection for AW/2014 named Viktoria + Woods X Lindy Klim. Utilising Lindy’s personal style elements such as exaggerated proportions and raw edging along with luxe fabrics like merino wool and silk tencel, the collection transcends seasons by providing necessary staples for every woman’s wardrobe. Being a mother like Lindy, I understood that this collection, in a nutshell, is made up of 20 pieces that a modern ,multitasking woman today needs – practical, functional and luxuriously comfortable but with an edge.
I visited the set where Lindy was busy being shot for the V+W X LK campaign to interview her and Margie Woods (from Vik +Woods ) and have a play with styling the pieces for this post – I wanted to add an element of 90s rock n’roll fun to our shoot and since Lindy is a personal friend and one of my favourite people in the world, the shoot soon turned into a riot of laughter and dancing !
Tanja: What attracted you to working with Viktoria + Woods?
Lindy: I have always been a fan of the brand’s aesthetic and the fact that they are a Melbourne brand made it all the more desirable. I believe we have so much local talent and it’s important to support our designers and businesses.
T: Who did you have in mind when you designed for this collection?
L: Me!!! I am just like any other busy mum that doesn’t want to compromise my style just because I have children…I have always had a sort of uniform that works well for my life style… then I just add seasonal pieces each year to update my wardrobe.
T: What is your favourite piece?
L: Hmmm… well I love the bomber jacket.. but I am a big denim fan and have always thought that V&W do fantastic denim so the boyfriend jeans and jacket are also high on my list!
T: What did you love most about the design process?
L: This partnership worked well for me as I am not a fashion designer and have no skills what so ever in drawing up designs but being able to explain to a designer what I like and don’t like is a dream come true.. I am very good at looking at a piece of clothing and seeing how it could be made better!
T:You are a mother and a businesswoman (Lindy is the creative director at Milk & Co) How do the clothes you wear reflect the dual necessities of your life ?
L: Very much. As I said I have a day to day uniform – usually skinny jeans ,t-shit and blazer. It doesn’t actually change that much except for my shoes if I go out at night.. I do however love to dress for a function or something special!
Tanja: How did this collaboration come about?
Margie Woods : Lindy has been a muse of ours for a long time. Her style is always paired back and simple but there is always a considered sense of modernity and timelessness with how she presents herself. These characteristic are at the very core of the VIKTORIA + WOODS brand. This collaboration could not have been more natural for us.
T: The collection has achieved a perfect balance by infusing a rock n’ roll sensibility into easy , wearable pieces . Who did you design for?
MW: We design for modern women who are confident, informed and incredibly busy. They appreciate designer elements, luxury and clothing that can take them from school drop off, to work and out for drinks with ease. Characteristics of high-end + luxury elements in this capsule are juxtaposed with laid back styling or ‘rock’ sensibility. Its a true indication of versatility, function and and how our customers live.
T: What did Lindy bring to the design process?
Lindy has an innate sense of style. She has a high-end sensibility with a very paired back approach to dressing. Previously, we may have had a more tailored approach to how we design. Lindy encouraged more exaggerated proportions and rawness into the capsule. This can be seen with elements such as extended sleeves, raw hemlines and slouchier textural shapes and proportions. Lindy was involved from conceptualising the designs, through to tweaking patterns and finals toiles. She was hands on even though to promotion including choosing the creative team we worked with on shoot day – which of course included you Tanja! I think that really helped keep things real, and energy high across the entire project and collaboration.
T: What is your favourite piece in the collection?
MW: The Empirical Coat (name inspired by your involvement on shoot day by the way!) is incredible. It’s made from a virgin wool blend and silk lined and bound. Apart from that, its detachable, so its 2 coats in one. But I also love The KLIM Boyfriend jeans. The design lines on the side view are stand out, and I always love a tapered zip ankle legs. Always flattering.
T: What can we expect from Victoria + Woods in the future?
MW: You can expect a lot more. We are working with some incredible creatives in the industry who are overwhelmingly inspiring and encouraging. I think this will start to reflect in the collections we design, the luxury fabrications we have committed to continue using, and the standard of imagery we produce for each collection. Apart from these creative steps we are taking, we have also just launched into David Jones, and opened our first retail store in High Street Armadale.
