Sunday night and I call up my friend to see if he would like to come along to the Opera house to see a play with me. It seems the line is dead for a long while, then a deep sigh comes out. It feels like I am torturing him but an answer comes out and it’s a yes. I can tell he thinks it will be boring and silly and a little old fashioned.
But this play is certainly not. This play is called This Is Our Youth and it was first written 16 years ago .Some of the biggest stars in showbiz clamoured to play the roles: Hayden Christensen, Jake Gyllenhaal,Matt Damon, Mark Ruffalo,Chris Klein, Casey Affleck, Freddie Prinze Jr… This time it’s Kieran Culkin, Michael Cera and Emily Barclay’s turn.
The plot of the play involves a stolen bag of $15k, a large bag of cocaine, a bunch of weed, teen language and a couple of dysfunctional horny boys. Without giving it away, the play is hilarious , well written and witty. Sure the one dimensional set doesn’t leave a lot of room for change but the story plods along nicely even for someone with a mild case of ADHD. To be honest I don’t feel older people would like this play much. They would be looking for nuanced performances, perfect pitch delivery and some kind of logic. Michael Cera who I love for his deadpan delivery doesn’t have the projection you would necessarily require of a theatre actor , Kieran Culkin is over the top crazy and Emily Barclay is intellectual and restrained. All these combinations don’t always gel but are a hoot to watch , especially if you adore these actors like I do.
For someone like my friend this play was a breath of fresh air. ” I thought it would be some boring monologue and I was scared of coming”-he said -” however it was just like watching a funny sitcom but at the Opera house! ”
