Porto Cervo is a playground purposefully built to carter to the rich and the famous. Holding no resemblance to the rest of Sardinia , this is a town of multi million dollar yachts, designer boutiques, expensive restaurants, manicured grounds and houses that look like they were transplanted from the Hollywood hills. We stayed at Hotel Balocco, a divine hotel reminiscent of Chateau Marmont, in it’s bungalow style rooms and easy glamour. The grounds are lush with colourful blooms, the pool is elegantly beautiful and breakfast is served on a balcony overlooking the whole bay. Make sure you get a suite with a terrace and you’ll feel like you are waking up in a private garden..
Since I love Italian food, we figured we couldn’t go wrong by booking dinner at Cipriani Porto Cervo . What we didn’t expect was how funny this night would turn out. The restaurant is located adjoining the “Billionare” nightclub that is owned by Flavio Briatore, the Formula 1 owner. Considering his penchant for buxom babes and fake tan, ofcourse Cipriani’s at Billionaire was always going to be gilded, shiny and extravagantly over the top. Add dancers , pumping Euro beats and a degustation menu involving pizza in the mix and things start to look like Vice’s Dos and Don’ts -the rich Med version. Giggles aplenty!
Remember, this is your last stop to stock up on designer gear as no other town has luxury stores in Sardinia. If you would prefer to stay out of town try the Hotel Romazzino, situated on a lovely beach of it’s own, and if you have a boat check out the La Maddalena islands for a day trip..
