Amidst the heavy rain that seems to follow Australian fashion week every year like a lovelorn puppy , Kirrily Johnston staged her show at Icebergs dining room and bar . And lo and behold ! The rain stopped just long enough that people could stand on the wide balcony and enjoy the views of the crashing waves while waiting for the show to start. A crazy turn out of people attended and the atmosphere turned into a bit of a social occasion since the show was over an hour late and drinks were plentiful. The clothes themselves were all awash in earthy tones and if i could sum it up i’d say a minimalist grecian warrior goddess took a brief turn into the 70s ,but is saying that a bit like the Merman ad in Zoolander exclaiming :“Moisture is the essence of wetness?” ?
Fabrics were beautiful with plenty of silks, leather and suede and the waists were mostly cinched creating a slim silhouette. What i will buy : orange slim flare pants and an orange crepe dress with a grey cross back. And the make-up ! Love!
Later on last night i attended Lover ‘s 10 year anniversary show that was held at the Studio in the Opera house .The Studio is such a terrific venue and Lover transformed it into a cool setting with a gleaming white rectangular runaway above which a huge white cube was suspended-in fact a multisided screen. The show started mysteriously enough, with a girl walking the length of the runway in darkness but soon lights were blasted and Julia Nobis opened the show amidst the whiteness of the screen above her. Raw portraits of models upon the screens heralded their entrance onto the catwalk . What a show it was! In many ways it was the most polished show i’ve seen by Lover and very fitting as one showcasing a decade in the business. Styling by Vanessa Coyle, the senior fashion editor of Harper’s Bazaar UK and creative direction by the very talented Mark Vassalo brought all the elements of this show in synch. I loved the pace and the palette of colours; white on white with a red lip and shoes, red bustier under a beige lace dress, red and camel, red on red, black and white. Sure there were a few breasts on display under sheer lace but that wasn’t what made Lover so sexy . The cut and quality of the lace and fabric shone through in this great production and it seemed like the Lover girl was ready to be Helmut Newton sexy; strong and sure of herself whereas in the past she was mostly Picnic at Hanging Rock sexy. Susien Chong and Nic Briand should be so proud.
